Herdade do Portocarro is one of the most unique projects in Portugal. Administratively, the estate is part of the Península de Setúbal demarcated wine region. But geographically, it is located in the Alentejo region. Basically, an Alentejo with Atlantic features. Hence the unmistakable style and personality of its wines. Located next to the “carro” – the highest point in the region – the vines extend over the south-facing slopes where they enjoy exceptional exposure to the sun as well as a perfect drainage.
The winery has revived a series of traditional vinification processes which today are considered state-of-the-art amongst the best wines, in particular the fermentation in French oak vats. This philosophy of consummate preservation, which crosses the whole production process, is aimed at obtaining top quality raw material. There is little intervention by man, allowing the wine to express its vigor and potential on its own. Currently, they are initiating a new phase in which production will be adapted to biodynamic viticulture.
