Adega Viúva Gomes Tinto 1969

Attributes

With decades of bottle age, the 1969 Colares Tinto displays a pale brick to tawny hue and an extraordinarily layered aromatic profile. Notes of dried cranberry, sour cherry, and blood orange are interwoven with rose petal, iodine, dried seaweed, leather, and savory spice. The palate is delicate yet persistent, driven by striking acidity and fully resolved, fine-grained tannins. Saline, earthy, and umami nuances emerge gradually. The finish is long, lifted, and quietly powerful.

The Estate

Adega Viúva Gomes, established in 1808, is located in Almoçageme, Colares, on a demarcated wine-growing region defined in 1908, characterized by its dunes and sandy soils sited on the coastline of Sintra, between the hills and the Atlantic Ocean, from Cabo da Roca until Magoito.

Wine Making

Ramisco grapes are sourced from ungrafted vines planted in sandy soils that naturally protect against phylloxera. Fermentation follows traditional methods, with extended aging in large, neutral wooden casks before prolonged bottle maturation. Colares wines are famously released after many years — sometimes decades — allowing tannins to soften while preserving freshness, structure, and extraordinary aging potential.

Food Suggestions

This historic wine is best paired with understated, savory dishes that respect its nuance and delicacy. Ideal matches include roast game birds, braised rabbit, mushroom-forward dishes, and aged cheeses. It also performs beautifully with classic Portuguese cuisine or enjoyed on its own as a contemplative, cellar-worthy wine where its complexity and sense of place can fully unfold.
