Weingut Karl Schäfer is a historic family estate located in Bad Dürkheim, in the Pfalz region of Germany, one of the country’s most important and sunniest winegrowing areas. Founded in 1832, the winery has been family-run for generations and is now led by the Schäfer family, continuing a long-standing tradition of producing wines that reflect both heritage and precision. Situated along the Deutsche Weinstraße (German Wine Route), the estate benefits from a unique microclimate that combines warm temperatures with cooling forest influences from the nearby Haardt Mountains.
The vineyards are spread across some of Bad Dürkheim’s most respected sites, including parcels with limestone, loess, and sandstone soils that provide excellent drainage and contribute to the wines’ structure and minerality. The Pfalz’s relatively dry, sunny climate allows grapes to achieve full ripeness while maintaining freshness. The estate focuses heavily on Riesling, alongside varieties such as Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder), Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder), and Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), all of which thrive in this diverse terroir.
Winemaking at Karl Schäfer is rooted in traditional German methods with a focus on clarity and site expression. Fermentations are carefully managed — often in stainless steel or large neutral oak — to preserve aromatics and balance. Rieslings range from dry (trocken) to off-dry styles, showcasing bright acidity, citrus, stone fruit, and mineral-driven precision, while the Pinot varieties offer texture and elegance.
Weingut Karl Schäfer remains a benchmark producer in the Pfalz, known for crafting wines that combine ripeness with structure and finesse. The estate’s commitment to terroir, family tradition, and thoughtful winemaking results in wines that are both expressive of their origin and highly versatile at the table.
