This Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is ravenously dark garnet in hue, showing upfront aromas of ripe black currant and cassis, accompanied by spicy hints (pepper, subtle oak spices) and tertiary notes that suggest a wood influence. On the palate it delivers firm, structured tannins with a full body; while the black fruit is forward, there’s a backbone of acidity and oak that promises it will evolve gracefully. The finish is persistent and wood-tinged, with a bit of bite that softens over time.
Quinta Monteiro de Matos is a family-owned winery currently run by the third generation of the family. Present in the Tejo region, Antonio Monteiro de Matos started the winery in the middle of the twentieth century. After two decades, in 1975, Antonio de Matos bought more land intending to plant more vineyards to make more wines as the demands were increasing every year at a high rate.
Grapes are from the Tejo DOC, grown on calcareous clay soils. The wine is aged in wood for about 9 months. Fermentation and maturation practices aim to support structure: balanced oak usage, preserving varietal character while integrating tannin and oak.
Pairs well with grilled or roasted red meats (beef, lamb), game (venison), richly sauced stews, or aged cheeses. It would also stand up well to savory mushrooms or peppery sauces. For drinking now, decanting will help; for longer cellaring, it should improve through 2026-2028.
