About Hunters

Hunter’s Wines is one of Marlborough’s pioneering family-owned wineries, established in 1979 by Irish-born Ernie Hunter and his wife, Jane Hunter, in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island. The winery played an important role in establishing Marlborough as an internationally recognized wine region, particularly for Sauvignon Blanc. Following Ernie’s death in 1987, Jane took over the business and became one of the most influential women in New Zealand wine. Often referred to as the “First Lady of New Zealand Wine,” Jane Hunter helped transform the small family estate into an internationally respected producer while maintaining its independent, family-owned identity.

Hunter’s is based in Rapaura, within Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, an area celebrated for its abundant sunshine, cool nights and free-draining alluvial soils. The vineyards benefit from the influence of the Wairau River, whose ancient riverbeds have deposited layers of gravel, stones and silt across the valley. These conditions encourage excellent drainage and help produce Sauvignon Blanc with concentrated citrus and tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity and distinctive herbal aromatics. Alongside its flagship Sauvignon Blanc, Hunter’s produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and traditional-method sparkling wines, demonstrating the versatility of Marlborough’s cool-climate vineyards.
